Bahamas Travel Health Visa: What It Was and Why You No Longer Need One
The Bahamas Travel Health Visa was eliminated back in June 2022, but the requirement still turns up often enough in outdated travel guides that it's worth setting the record straight. Below: what the visa required, why the Bahamian government introduced it, and the exact timeline of its removal.
What Was the Bahamas Travel Health Visa?
The Bahamas Travel Health Visa was a mandatory pre-arrival online application, submitted through the government portal travel.gov.bs, required of anyone traveling to The Bahamas during the COVID-19 pandemic. It was introduced on July 1, 2020, as part of the country's phased reopening of its international borders.
Travelers applying for the visa had to upload a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR test result. Starting November 14, 2020, the application also required travelers to opt in to COVID-19 health insurance covering the duration of their stay.
Why the Bahamian Government Created It
The visa served as a pre-arrival screening mechanism, allowing Bahamian health and immigration authorities to assess COVID-19 risk before travelers set foot in the country. It was one part of a broader set of health protocols the government implemented to safely reopen tourism, one of the nation's primary economic sectors, during an unprecedented global health crisis.
Once submitted, applications were reviewed and assigned one of three statuses:
- Green - approved
- Yellow - pending
- Red - denied
Travelers were required to present their application status upon arrival, and the process was administered in coordination with the country's immigration and health authorities.
What Information Travelers Had to Submit
Applying for the Travel Health Visa involved submitting several categories of information:
- Personal, contact, and travel itinerary details
- A negative RT-PCR COVID-19 test result, uploaded with the application
- From November 14, 2020 onward, confirmation of COVID-19 health insurance coverage for the trip
Because applications could take up to 72 hours to process, travelers were advised to apply well ahead of their departure date to avoid delays.
How the Requirement Changed Over the Pandemic
The Travel Health Visa's requirements shifted more than once as the pandemic progressed:
- July 2020
Launched alongside The Bahamas' border reopening, paired with a mandatory negative pre-arrival test.
- November 2020
A COVID-19 health insurance opt-in was added to the application requirements.
- 2021-2022
Requirements continued to shift alongside evolving vaccination-status rules, reflecting the changing state of the pandemic both in The Bahamas and globally.
When and Why It Was Scrapped
The Bahamas Travel Health Visa requirement officially ended at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, June 19, 2022, a change announced by Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper. Shortly after, the separate requirement for pre-travel COVID-19 testing was also eliminated, effective September 20, 2022.
Government officials described the visa as "a burden for travellers" and framed its removal as a clear signal that The Bahamas was fully reopening to tourism without pandemic-era friction.
Is Anything Similar Required to Enter The Bahamas Today?
No. As of today, no Travel Health Visa, COVID-19 test, or proof of vaccination is required to enter The Bahamas. According to the country's official travel-updates page, all travelers - regardless of vaccination status - are free from pre-travel COVID-19 testing requirements, and there are no quarantine requirements upon arrival.
Standard Bahamian immigration entry requirements - a valid passport, and a visa where applicable based on nationality - still apply, but these are entirely separate from the discontinued COVID-era health visa and are unrelated to the pandemic-specific process described above.
One important note: the original application portal at travel.gov.bs may still be reachable online, and it may display outdated instructions suggesting the visa is still required. This reflects a page that simply hasn't been taken down - not a live or current entry requirement. The Bahamian government's own 2022 announcements, along with the current travel-updates page on bahamas.com, confirm the requirement no longer exists.
Do I still need a Bahamas Travel Health Visa?
No. The requirement ended on June 19, 2022.
What was the Bahamas Travel Health Visa used for?
It screened incoming travelers for COVID-19 risk before arrival, as part of the country's pandemic-era reopening protocols.
When was it introduced?
It launched alongside The Bahamas' border reopening on July 1, 2020.
Do I still need a COVID-19 test to enter The Bahamas?
No. That separate requirement was eliminated on September 20, 2022.
What if I find an old application page online today?
It's likely an outdated, unmaintained page. Per the Bahamian government's official announcements, the requirement itself no longer exists.
